Albany N.Y. – On December 6, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center will host the unveiling of their sixth juried photo exhibit, celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve.

Jackie Citriniti, Lead Educator and show designer said “The photo exhibit is an amazing display of local talent. Out of hundreds of submissions, it is a daunting task to choose the finalists.”  Citriniti continued, “Each photograph reveals incredible features of this rare ecosystem, from macro to micro, from flora and fauna to landscapes, from color to black and white. This is a great opportunity to not only view breathtaking art up close and personal but experience this globally rare, nationally significant, and locally distinct preserve.” …

December 2019–January 2020

Astoria, N.Y. — Museum of the Moving Image has announced that the major exhibition Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey will open January 18, 2020, accompanied by a series of films that influenced Kubrick and co-writer Arthur C. Clarke; regular screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, in DCP and 70mm; plus additional to-be-announced events. In addition, the annual Curators’ Choice series returns in December and January and features some of the past year’s best films, and curators’ personal favorites, with some filmmaker appearances. Below is an overview of programs from late-November through January 2020; additional programs will be announced as they are confirmed.

A featured one-day exhibit displays a collection of rare books Henry Knox recommended to John Adams about the art of war

Ticonderoga, N.Y. – Fort Ticonderoga, a premiere historic and travel destination, will present a one-day living history event on December 7 to highlight Henry Knox’s epic feat as he prepared to move massive cannon from Ticonderoga to Boston to force the British evacuation of 1776.

Auburn, NY (Nov. 22, 2019) – The Schweinfurth Art Center is joining with other cultural and historic sites in Auburn, NY, for Holiday Traditions and will be open for free on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019. The event has a long tradition in Auburn, starting more than 30 years ago.

This year, the Schweinfurth Art Center will be open 1 to 5 p.m. for visitors to view the center's two exhibitions, "Quilts=Art=Quilts 2019" and "Narrative Quilts" by Ellen M. Blalock. The center will be serving mulled cider and holiday cookies.

Tupper Lake, N.Y. - The Wild Center's Youth Climate Program has been recognized by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as a winner of the 2019 New York Environmental Excellence Awards. The Wild Center was named one of four innovation and sustainability leaders across New York State at the 16th annual awards celebration, held on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Utica, N.Y. – Join Hamilton College History Professor Maurice Isserman at the Oneida County History Center for an illustrated talk on his just-published book, The Winter Army: The 10th Mountain Division in World War II.  The ranks of the 10^th were filled by men who in civilian life were already proficient in skiing and mountaineering. They were shipped to the Italian front and their actions in the Apennine Mountains and the Alps led to the German surrender in Italy on May 2, 1945. The division was disbanded in late 1945, but reestablished in the 1980s, and is based today at Fort Drum, in Watertown, New York.  …

The Empire State Unseats Three-Time Reigning Champion Michigan To Reclaim The Prestigious "Top Spot For Fall Foliage" Title

Melville, NY – Today, Nikon Inc. unveiled New York as the winner of its fifth annual “Top Spots for Fall Foliage” competition to determine America’s most picture-perfect state to photograph autumn colors. After an exciting race, New York ousted the other forty-nine hopefuls for the title of “Best State for Fall Photography” in the United States. Not only does this year mark New York’s second time earning the prestigious honor, but the victory is significant, as it is the first time in three years for a state to de-throne the competition’s reigning champion – Michigan.
